Electron and proton transfer steps are ubiquitous in nature and key for the function of many man-made materials and devices. This contribution will discuss (some of) the specific challenges that arise when studying molecular functional units, which do support light-driven electron and / or proton transfer, at interfaces or integrated into polymers. In particular, the presentation will focus on the ultrafast reactivity in such materials emphasizing the role of local structural inhomogeneities, intermolecular interactions and solvation of the functional units for the reaction rates and yields.
